The world of opera is one that this reviewer is not exactly well versed in, to put it mildly. The number of operas that I’ve seen could be counted on one hand and it’s literally only the Jerry Springer Opera so it’s not like that counts for anything. This is to say that I, and possibly most non-Opera fans, have no idea who Maria Callas is or what about her would make her such an important figure to be worthy of a biopic. Sure you can take a look at her Wikipedia and see her referred to as “The Bible of Opera” but without knowing her it means you effectively have to go in blind and learn about her as the film progresses… on some levels, Maria is a fascinating way to get to know this performer and makes you want to know even more. On other levels, it makes it hard to get to know this woman.

Best Performances of 2021

2021 has been one hell of a year and we’ve already talked about the best and worst films, but sometimes there are specific performances that really just demand to be praised that aren’t necessarily in the best or worst films. Some performances are so good that they demand praise even if the film they’re part of is awful, and some are just pure fun and deserve to be talked about because we should be able to admit to enjoying them.

The One And Only Ivan (2020) – Ivan The Terrific

The One and Only Ivan Info

In 2012, author Katherine Applegate released The One And Only Ivan. The novel was based on the real story of a circus gorilla named Ivan who was kept in the middle of a shopping mall until a large petition and the threat of a massive boycott got him transferred to a zoo where he would have something resembling actual freedom. The book was a smash hit, winning several awards and appearing on several “must read’ lists so an adaptation was inevitable and Disney just happened to be the ones to do it… and their version got nominated for an Oscar, hence why we’re talking about it.
